Greetings friends, I hope you had a great Christmas and New Year
holiday and feel rested and ready to go for this coming year. I
apologize it's been so long since I last sent out an update. I'll try to
fill you in the best I can of my whereabouts and dealings in the course
of the last three months.
The last time I shared, I ended sharing about getting invited into a friend's home in Central Taiwan, where I got to connect with his family over a major Taiwanese festival. A lot has happened since then, I'll do my best in the coming paragraphs to bring my life up to speed.
As for language learning and ministry, not a whole lot has changed. I continue to attend two to three classes per week as I seek to take in the Chinese language. I finished my second book in December and now I am beginning to study the third of seven books. I am continuing to teach an Advanced English class two nights a week and go to the hospital for evangelism on a weekly basis.
A few things have changed here though. The first thing that's changed has been in my method of language learning. About the time of my last update, I began to more intentionally meet one on one with Taiwanese and do what we call language exchanges. Language exchanges are simply ways to get out of the books and intentionally and practically use the language you are learning. I've been consistently meeting with a couple of people now for a couple months.
Most of you already know the other major change that's happened, but I figured it may be beneficial to officially share Rachel and I's engagement on the blog. I spent over two months keeping the secret from Rachel of my impending coming back to America and the proposal that was to follow once I got there. Time will not afford me to share the entire story on here, but I can give a brief summary. I flew back to Williston on December 17th. I landed at 5:30 p.m. and at 6:00 I had Rachel off on a treasure hunt that would take her around the city of Williston to places that were significant to our relationship. At each place she found two things. First, she found people who loved her and wanted to encourage her. Second, she found a clue that would send her to the next location. The treasure hunt sent her to seven different locations over the course of an hour and a half (with only one slight detour). I was at the end of the treasure hunt with ring in hand and asked her if she would be my adventure buddy for life! And she said YES!!!!!
With this comes significant changes to my time in Taiwan. Rachel will make her initial move out here in early March of this year to do a school focused on discipleship and missions. That school will last about five months and then in August we will head back to the States to get married on September 4th over Labor Day weekend. We'll spend a few more weeks in America, attending my brother's wedding, and then start our new life together here in Taiwan.
As for prayer requests, I have a few to share with you.
1. Pray for Rachel and for this season of transition. She has a lot happening over the course of the next couple months. Pray for God's peace over her life and for her to be able to get everything done she needs to get done and to transition out of Williston and in to Taiwan well.
2. This season of language learning and being away from Rachel and my family and church community has been challenging. Pray for a time of refreshing, that my passion for the Lord and my walking in my purpose in Taiwan would be a delight.
3. Pray that God would continue to give more opportunities to bring the gospel to this nation both for myself and for all who are ministering alongside me.
I do hope and pray you are blessed in the reading of this and are encouraged. Please please, tell me about your life. One of the best ways you can encourage me is simply by sharing about your own lives. Even something as simple as an update about your work life. I look forward to hearing from you!
God's grace be with you,
Travis
